Metrolink

Metrolink is California’s largest commuter rail system, serving six counties in Southern California. The system serves 55 stations on 512 miles of track, and had an average weekday ridership of 38,600 during the third quarter of 2010.

Metrolink operates seven separate lines throughout the service area. Fares are variable based on distance with the highest fare on a single line being $14.75 on trips from San Bernardino to Oceanside via the Inland Empire-Orange County Line.

Metrolink uses GM Electro-Motive locomotives and Bombardier Bi-Level coaches.

Metrolink is governed by the Southern California Regional Railroad Authority, a joint powers board consisting of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Orange County Transportation Authority, the Riverside County Transportation Commission, the San Bernardino Associated Governments, and the Ventura County Transportation Commission.

Several extensions of the Metrolink system have been discussed in recent years, most notably an extension of the 91 line from Riverside to Peris which could open by 2012.
