Muni Historic Streetcars

San Francisco Municipal Railway has assembled the most diverse fleet of historic streetcars in the world. In addition to several President’s Class Cars (pictured), Muni runs trams from cities all around the world. For profiles of all Muni’s historic streetcars, visit the excellent Market Street Railway website.

Currently, the historic vehicles run along the surface on the F-Market and Wharves line from the Castro to Fisherman’s Wharf via Market Street and the Embarcadero. An extension to Fort Mason has been proposed. An E-Embarcadero line is being considered when more vehicles are available – this line would travel along the waterfront from Fisherman’s Wharf to AT&T Park and the Caltrain Depot.

The F-Market line is a very popular tourist attraction as well as an alternative to the Muni Metro subway. According to Muni’s 2008 Transit Effectiveness Project the F-Market line averaged 18,520 daily boardings.
